Every food business in India – from a home bakery to a large manufacturer – must be registered or licensed with the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). The type you need depends on your business size and activity.
The three categories

The category is decided mainly by annual turnover and production capacity, as notified by FSSAI. Importers, exporters and certain other activities always need a central licence, whatever their size.
Documents commonly required
- Photo ID and address proof of the owner or partners/directors
- Proof of possession of the premises
- List of food products
- For licences: layout plan, list of equipment, water test report and a food safety management plan
Validity and renewal
Registration and licences are issued for one to five years, as chosen. Renew before expiry to avoid penalties and a lapse.
Annual return

Display your number
The FSSAI number must be printed on food labels and displayed at the premises. Online sellers must show it on their listings.
