When Is Government Approval Needed for FDI?
Most foreign investment in India comes under the automatic route and needs no prior approval. But some sectors – and investment beyond certain limits – fall under the government route, where approval from the government is needed before the investment is made.
Investment from an entity of a country that shares a land border with India, or where the beneficial owner is from such a country, also needs government approval. Applications are filed online on the Foreign Investment Facilitation Portal and decided by the competent ministry, with security clearance where required.
