How to create a GST invoice online
- Add your business: name, GSTIN, address, bank or UPI details and your logo. Your GSTIN fills in your State and PAN automatically.
- Add your clients and services: save each client with their GSTIN and State, and each service or product with its HSN/SAC code, price and GST rate.
- Create the invoice: pick the client and items. The tool chooses the right document, works out CGST + SGST or IGST, checks the Rule 46 fields and gives you a PDF, print copy or WhatsApp message.
GST invoice format: what every tax invoice must show
Rule 46 of the CGST Rules, 2017 lists the details a tax invoice must contain. This generator prints all of them:
| Supplier name, address and GSTIN | Invoice number: consecutive, unique in the financial year, up to 16 characters (letters, numbers, "-" and "/") |
| Date of issue | Recipient name, address and GSTIN (if registered) |
| HSN code for goods / SAC code for services | Description, quantity and unit |
| Taxable value after discount | GST rate and amount: CGST, SGST/UTGST or IGST, and cess |
| Place of supply with State name and code | Whether tax is payable on reverse charge |
| Delivery address, if different from place of supply | Signature or digital signature of the supplier |
For an unregistered buyer with taxable value of ₹50,000 or more, the buyer's name, address and State must also be shown. Invoices for goods are made in three copies (original for recipient, duplicate for transporter, triplicate for supplier); invoices for services in two.
Tax invoice, bill of supply, proforma: which one to issue
| Your situation | Document |
|---|---|
| Regular GST registration, taxable supply | Tax invoice with GST |
| Composition scheme, or only exempt / nil-rated supplies | Bill of supply, no GST charged |
| Not registered under GST | Plain invoice, no GST shown |
| Quotation or advance request before the supply | Proforma invoice, not a tax invoice |
| Export or supply to an SEZ | Tax invoice with the export / SEZ endorsement, with IGST or under LUT |
The generator picks the right document automatically from your registration type and the items on the bill.
Proforma invoice format under GST
GST law does not prescribe a format for a proforma invoice, and it is not a tax invoice. It creates no GST liability and the buyer cannot claim input tax credit on it. A good proforma still shows the same details as a tax invoice (your GSTIN, the client, HSN/SAC, rates and the estimated GST) plus a validity date, and is clearly marked "Proforma invoice". Use a separate number series for proformas. When the client confirms, convert it into a tax invoice. This tool does it in one click and prints "Against Proforma" with the proforma number.
If you receive an advance for services against a proforma, GST is payable on the advance and a receipt voucher should be issued. Advances for goods do not attract GST at the time of receipt.
CGST, SGST, UTGST or IGST?
Compare your State with the place of supply. Same State: half the GST is CGST and half SGST. In Chandigarh, Ladakh, Lakshadweep, Andaman & Nicobar Islands and Dadra & Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu it is UTGST instead of SGST. Different State, export or SEZ: the full amount is IGST. Main GST rates from 22 September 2025 are 5% and 18%, with 40% for luxury and sin goods. Check rates with our GST calculator and codes with the HSN / SAC finder.
When must an invoice be issued?
- Services: within 30 days of providing the service (45 days for banks and NBFCs).
- Goods: on or before removal or delivery of the goods. Goods worth more than ₹50,000 usually also need an e-way bill.
- E-invoicing: if your turnover is above ₹5 crore, B2B and export invoices must be reported on the Invoice Registration Portal for an IRN. With turnover of ₹10 crore or more, report within 30 days of the invoice date.
Keep all invoices for at least six years (72 months), as required by section 36 of the CGST Act.
Frequently asked questions
Is this GST invoice generator really free?
Yes. You can create unlimited tax invoices, proforma invoices and bills of supply and download them as PDF without signing up or paying anything.
What must a GST tax invoice contain?
Under Rule 46 of the CGST Rules a tax invoice must show the supplier's name, address and GSTIN, a unique serial number of up to 16 characters, the date, the recipient's details, HSN or SAC code, description, quantity, taxable value, GST rate and amount, place of supply, whether reverse charge applies, and a signature.
What is a proforma invoice under GST?
A proforma invoice is a quotation or advance request sent before the actual supply. It is not a tax invoice, creates no GST liability and the buyer cannot claim input tax credit on it. Once the client confirms, you issue a proper tax invoice.
When should I issue a bill of supply instead of a tax invoice?
Issue a bill of supply when you cannot charge GST: if you are registered under the composition scheme, or if everything you are billing is exempt or nil-rated. A composition taxpayer must write "composition taxable person, not eligible to collect tax on supplies" on it.
When do I charge CGST and SGST, and when IGST?
If your State and the place of supply are the same, charge CGST plus SGST (or UTGST in Union Territories without a legislature). If they are different, or the supply is an export or to an SEZ, charge IGST.
Can I make an invoice if I am not registered under GST?
Yes. An unregistered business can issue a plain invoice or bill, but it must not charge or show GST. The tool removes all GST columns for unregistered businesses. If your turnover is close to the limit, get GST registration.
Do I need e-invoicing?
E-invoicing applies to businesses whose aggregate turnover in any year since 2017-18 exceeds ₹5 crore, for B2B, export and SEZ invoices. Such invoices must be reported on the Invoice Registration Portal to get an IRN. You can add the IRN and QR to your invoice in this tool.
Where is my invoice data stored?
Your business details, clients, items and invoices are saved only in your own browser on your device. Nothing is sent to our server. Download a backup from Settings so you do not lose it if you clear your browser data.
