  2. The tool checks the format and check digit instantly – most typing mistakes are caught here.

Always confirm that the name matches the party you are dealing with and that the status is Active before you pay or claim input tax credit.

What a GSTIN is made of

CharactersMeaning
1–2State code (for example 07 Delhi, 09 Uttar Pradesh, 06 Haryana)
3–12PAN of the business
13Number of the registration under that PAN in the state (1–9, then A–Z)
14“Z” by default
15Check digit calculated from the first 14 characters

Why verify a supplier’s GSTIN?

Your input tax credit depends on the supplier being registered and reporting your invoice. A cancelled, suspended or fake GSTIN on a purchase invoice can mean lost credit, interest and notices. Checking the name and status before you pay takes a few seconds.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find the business name from a GST number?

Enter the GSTIN above and press Search. The tool shows the legal name and trade name registered with GST, along with the status and address.

Is this the same information as the GST portal?

Yes, it comes from GST registration records through a GST data provider. For official proof, you can also search the number on the GST portal's Search Taxpayer page.

What does 'Cancelled' or 'Suspended' status mean?

The registration is no longer active. Do not charge or pay GST against it, and check with the supplier before claiming input tax credit.

What does the 4th character of the PAN in a GSTIN mean?

It shows the type of taxpayer, for example P for individual, C for company and F for firm or LLP.

Can one PAN have more than one GSTIN?

Yes. A business gets a separate GSTIN in each state where it is registered, and can hold more than one in the same state for separate business verticals.

Details are shown as returned by GST records at the time of search and may be up to 7 days old. Confirm on the GST portal before relying on them.
