When you file a trademark in India, you must choose one or more classes. Your protection covers only the goods or services in the classes you file in, so picking the right ones is one of the most important decisions in the process.
India follows the international Nice Classification, which groups goods and services into 45 classes: classes 1 to 34 cover goods and classes 35 to 45 cover services.
| Class | What it covers (examples) |
|---|---|
| 3 | Cosmetics, soaps, perfumes, cleaning preparations |
| 5 | Pharmaceuticals, medical and dietary supplements |
| 9 | Software, mobile apps, electronic devices |
| 25 | Clothing, footwear, headwear |
| 29 and 30 | Food items – processed foods, spices, tea, coffee, bakery |
| 35 | Advertising, business management, retail and online store services |
| 41 | Education, training, entertainment |
| 42 | IT services, software development, SaaS |
| 43 | Restaurants, cafes, catering, hotels |
| 44 | Medical, beauty and healthcare services |
You can file one application covering several classes, or separate applications. Each class attracts its own government fee. Filing in too few classes leaves gaps; filing in too many adds cost and can invite objections.
