Advance tax means paying your income tax during the year, as you earn, instead of in one lump sum at the end. It applies to businesses, professionals and even salaried people who have significant other income.
Note: the Income-tax Act, 2025 has replaced the Income-tax Act, 1961 from 1 April 2026. Section numbers have changed, but the concepts explained here continue. Always check the provisions that apply to your financial year.
Anyone whose estimated tax liability for the year, after TDS, is above the threshold set by law. This commonly includes:
Resident senior citizens without business income are generally exempt.

Taxpayers under presumptive taxation for business or profession can pay the whole amount in one instalment by 15 March.
